The Short Sell

I wrote a song to raise money for charity. The single costs £1. That is the price of a twin pack of Jaffa cakes. The charities are St Leonard's Hospice and Bloodwise. St Leonard's Hospice offers palliative care for people based in York. It supports patients reaching the end of their lives and their support families and carers. This is one of the charities that A Night To Remember has been supporting for many years. Bloodwise funds research into blood cancer. 1 in 16 men and 1 in 22 women develop blood cancer. With those statistics you probably know someone who has been affected. I do. One of my relatives is now in remission after her battle with cancer.

Lift You Up is a good song and it features some great artists. Please buy it and share it with your friends so they will buy it too. I want to raise £1000. Help me do it.

Thanks

Simon~

The Long Sell

Lift You Up was borne of inspiration after a night playing music at the Barbican in York to celebrate A Night To Remember, a concert created by Ian Donaghy to raise money for York based charities. As I watched the crowd singing it struck me that the musicians on stage and crowd were all in it together, we were all creating something magical. It was then that the words ‘we’ll be there with our arms wide open, we will lift you up’, came into my head. I went home and I wrote a song that night. I knew that I wanted the song to be a charity single and I also knew that I wanted to raise money for one of my relatives who had not long since won their battle with an aggressive type of cancer. I also wanted to honour A Night To Remember by raising money for St Leonard's Hospice. I enlisted the help of the amazing musicians from A Night To Remember and we set about arranging, recording and mixing the song. I am very proud of the result.

It is only with the help and patience of a large group of fantastic people that I was able to finish and present this work. There are many people without whom I would have not been able to make this song happen but I would especially like to thank Dave Clements, Heather Findlay and Ian Donaghy for giving many hours of their time to help me bring this together and also to all the musicians and artists who added their touches of fairy dust to help finish the project. There is a full list of participants in the track credits of the song.

lyrics

Lift You Up

There are times
When you fall
Through no fault of your own
There is no-one there at all
That can lend
A helping hand
If you find yourself alone
If you find you cannot stand

I’ll be there with my arms wide open
I’ll be there though your heart may be broken
I will share all the love that I have with you
When you’re not strong enough
I will lift you up

Don’t feel ashamed
When you’re in need
Because we’re all just broken pieces
In this endless tapestry
But we are family
That is what we are
From the inside out
We will help you heal your deepest scars

We’ll be there with our arms wide open
We’ll be there though your heart may be broken
We will share all the love that we have with you
When you’re not strong enough
We will lift you up

I will find a way
I will help you through
I will share the pain
With you

We are family
That is what we are
From the inside out
We will help you heal the deepest scars

We’ll be there with our arms wide open
We’ll be there though your heart may be broken
We will share all the love that we have with you
When times are tough
And you’re not strong enough
We will lift you up
When you’re not strong enough
We will lift you up

We will lift you up

My heartfelt gratitude to all the musicians who took part in creating this music and the time they dedicated to it, to David Clements and Heather Findlay for all their hard work in helping to arrange the song and committing it to ‘tape’, Simon Wallace for creating a video to accompany the song, Ian Donaghy for help, support, inspiration and all round loveliness and to Johanna Elliott to whom this song is dedicated.

We are family. That is what we are.
